When Should Cataracts Be Removed?

Cataracts often develop slowly, so it can be hard to know when it is time to do something about them. At first, you may notice blurry vision, more glare while driving, or trouble reading in dim light. Over time, those changes can start affecting your comfort, safety, and daily routine.

At Linda Vision, our team serves Los Angeles and Monterey Park with patient-focused eye care in a warm, comfortable setting. Dr. Bach Lan Linda Vu is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in refractive cataract surgery, and Dr. Joni Lu is a board-certified ophthalmologist who treats cataracts and other eye conditions. Our team also includes Dr. Matthew Cheung, a board-certified optometrist with a strong interest in ocular disease and community care.

Cataracts Do Not Always Need Surgery Right Away

A cataract forms when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. In the early stages, updated glasses, brighter lighting, or anti-glare lenses may help you manage symptoms.

Glasses, contact lenses, diet changes, or eye drops cannot make the cloudiness go away. Surgery is the only way to remove it. That does not mean treatment is needed immediately, but your symptoms should be monitored as they change.

Signs It May Be Time to Consider Cataract Removal

Cataract removal is usually considered when cloudy vision begins affecting your daily life, independence, or safety. A comprehensive eye exam can show how much the cataract is affecting your sight and whether surgery should be discussed.

You may be ready to discuss cataract surgery if you have:

  • Trouble driving, especially at night
  • Blurry, cloudy, double, or distorted vision
  • Glare or halos around lights
  • Difficulty reading, watching TV, or using a computer
  • Colors that look dim or faded
  • Frequent changes in your glasses prescription
  • Trouble seeing well enough for work, hobbies, errands, or medications

What Happens During Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is typically performed one eye at a time and usually takes less than 30 minutes. During the procedure, the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens.

Before the procedure, we take detailed measurements, review your eye health, and discuss lens options. Afterward, eye drops and follow-up visits help support healing and allow us to monitor your recovery.
